Sleep Apnea in the Trucking Industry

According to separate studies completed by the FMCSA, ATA, ATRI, UPenn, and several other independent agencies, over 28% of all truck drivers suffer from Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea is the most common type of Sleep Apnea among truck drivers.

This serious disorder can cause drivers to have high blood pressure and other cardiovascular disease, memory problems, weight gain and headaches. The most common symptom of untreated Sleep Apnea is Excessive Daytime Sleepiness which can often lead to people with sleep disorders experiencing microsleeps.

Sleep Apnea most commonly affects trucking companies in the areas of Safety, Liability, Health Care Costs, and Retention.

  • Safety: In a Crash Risk study published by the FMCSA, drivers with severe Sleep Apnea were 460% more likely to be involved in a severe crash in a seven year period than drivers with no Sleep Apnea.
  • Liability: The FMCSA reports that the average cost of an accident caused by a large truck involving fatalities is approximately $3.4 million, while the average cost of an accident involving injuries was $217,000.
  • Health Care Costs: Research shows that drivers who have Sleep Apnea, and yet remain untreated, cost their companies an average of $536 per driver per month more in health care costs vs. a driver who is receiving treatment.
  • Retention: In a study published by the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) it was found that, “The prevalence of moderate to severe sleep apnea is twice as high among CDL holders no longer currently employed as drivers, suggesting that the industry may be losing valuable drivers because of undiagnosed sleep apnea.”

Research has shown that retention rates among drivers being treated for sleep apnea are 55% higher than drivers not receiving treatment.
