Many, if not all, trucking employers will be looking at instituting a sleep health or fatigue wellness program in the near future. The desire pushing this initiative is to make sure all of their fleet is as healthy and safe as possible while out there on the road. What is important to keep in mind as an employee and specifically a trucker is that having sleep apnea does not mean you have to give up life on the road or your ability to drive professionally. In most cases obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) can be treated with minor changes to your daily life.
By the use of a CPAP or APAP machine during your normal sleep regime to treat the condition of OSA, you can drastically reduce or even eliminate the loss of rest you would normally experience. While all cases and results of treatment are unique, a lot of drivers who participate in regular treatment for OSA have experienced:
- an increase in metabolism
- an initial decrease in weight
- an overall feeling of better health
- waking up feeling rested.. for a change
- better alertness while behind the wheel
SLEEP ACCESS programs work with your employer to make sure that addressing the health and safety related concerns of fatigue and sleep apnea are addressed in the simplest, most effective and cost conscious way possible. If at any point in your company’s sleep health program you have questions that come up, please feel free to call us or your company to find out more about what is expected of you and how this program can help you live healthier and drive safer.
